Soft Tissue Injury – An Overview Of The Healing Process

The soft tissue of your tooth is the portion that exists in its center. It is also called pulp and contains nerves, lymph vessels and blood. So, typically, you feel pain in the tooth when this soft tissue suffers injury. Also, when you tooth rots, it is this part that begins to go bad. In such cases dentists clean out the pulp and fill the tooth in order prevent the rot from spreading to other teeth and causing damage.

When soft tissue is injured, you need to visit a dentist to get the condition treated. Recent studies have proved that the healing process is expedited when low level dental laser therapy is used to treat the affected part. As the soft tissue begins to heal, it goes through several phases before making a complete recovery.

Stages of soft tissue recovery

Soft tissue goes through three stages of recovery. In the first stage, which immediately follows the injury, the affected area swells and causes a lot of pain. This stage is called acute inflammatory phase. The swelling is caused as a response to injury and is a good sign because it indicates that your body has begun to tackle it.

The second stage is called the repair phase. In this stage, inflammation caused in the soft tissue and gums begins to recede. The body produces collagen in the affected area and pumps in more oxygen and vitamins in order to aid the healing process.

The third and last phase is called the remodeling phase. In this stage, the injury is well on its way to recovery. The third stage is very prolonged and can take up to 12 months before you make a complete recovery. The duration depends on the seriousness of injury.

Advanced treatments such as the use of diode laser have definitely been a boon to soft tissue recovery.
